Why Does My Washer Stink?
A tip from Ross, owner of Bobs Appliance.
These are my own recommendations from years of in-home repairs. They don't always match what the manufacturers say, but they're what I've seen work.
Most smelly washers come from too much soap and fabric softener, not a broken part.
Here's how it works: your washer fills with water, the soap grabs the dirt and grime from your laundry, and the rinse cycle is supposed to wash all of it away. When you use too much soap, fabric softener, or anything else, some gets left behind in the washer along with that dirt and grime. Over time it builds up and starts to stink. Newer washers use much less water than older ones, so this happens faster. To get rid of the smell, you have to get rid of that buildup.
- Detergent: 2 to 3 tablespoons of liquid is the most you need for any load, however dirty. A quick way to measure is the first line on the cap that comes with the bottle. Don't just hold the button down and circle the tub, because in my experience that's often three times what you need or more. With pods, I don't recommend ever using more than one. Keep in mind detergent companies are in the business of selling detergent. Using more is good for them, not for your washer.
- Fabric softener: use less, and mix it about half and half with water.
- Scent beads: I don't use them myself. In my experience they can lock in a sour smell that comes back once towels or workout clothes warm up.
- Hot water: run a hot water load every so often to help clear out buildup.
- Monthly cleaning: run a washer cleaner at least once a month. The one I use is Active washer cleaner tablets. If your washer gets really heavy use, like a big family or an animal rescue, go twice a month.
