Dryer Taking Forever to Dry? Check Your Lint Screen

A tip from Ross, owner of Bobs Appliance.

These are my own recommendations from years of in-home repairs. They don't always match what the manufacturers say, but they're what I've seen work.

Wiping the lint off your screen every load isn't enough if you use dryer sheets, fabric softener, or scent beads. Over time they leave a waxy film on the screen that's hard to see. On a big share of the dryer calls I go to, the lint screen is coated and barely lets air through.

When air can't pass through the screen, it finds other paths, and the lint goes with it into the inside of the dryer. That leads to long dry times, lint buildup inside the machine, and a dryer that runs hot without drying. Sometimes it's so clogged it feels like steam inside. In my experience, the extra heat also wears out heating elements sooner.

The fix: for most households, scrub the lint screen at least once a month with warm water, dish soap, and a soft brush. Dry it completely before you put it back, and never run the dryer without it.

A quick check I use: run a little water over the screen. If the water pools on top instead of going through, it needs cleaning.

Still slow after a good cleaning? Lint may already be built up inside the dryer. See our Basic Dryer Cleaning service or dryer repair.
